Costa Rica Fishing Charters: Trophies in Paradise

Image of sea life, animal, swordfish, fish, shark

You’re in paradise and want to go fishing. We don’t blame you at all. Costa Rica is one of our favorite fishing destinations.

But where to start? First, we’ll take a look at the many fishing opportunities found in Costa Rica. Then we’ll discuss how to get your group on a professionally guided fishing charter. It’s easier than you can imagine!

Fishing in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a beautiful, tropical paradise. It’s no wonder you’ve chosen this location as your vacation destination. And the good news is: there’s fantastic fishing on either coast.

On the East Coast is the Caribbean Sea, featuring crystal clear waters and some of the best tarpon fishing in the world. The habitat created by the mangrove trees and shallow waters is perfect for the thousands of tarpon found in the area. The season begins in late summer and runs until February. Although if the weather is favorable you can fish the spring and early summer months as well. Other species on the Caribbean side include snook, mackerel, amberjack, dorado (also known as Mahi Mahi), snapper, and more.

The west coast is twice as long as the east coast, and provides access to more species in good numbers. If you’re in the middle of Costa Rica trying to decide which coast to travel to for your fishing excursion, the answer would depend on what type of fishing you were looking to do. Our vote is for the west coast every time. Every. Time.

This is because the west coast opportunities are why anglers put Costa Rica on their bucket list. It’s a top sportfishing destination because of the Pacific Ocean, and all the trophy fish waiting for you there. From the coast to the deep sea, anglers are dreaming about reeling in a monster fish.

Inshore trips on the Pacific are filled with roosterfish, snook, cubera snapper, mangrove snapper, and a variety of grouper. These are trips that are typically within 9 miles of the shore. There are several bays and inlets along the west coast that hold large fish in good numbers. It’s just a matter of finding them and pulling them to the boat. Roosterfish are a favorite simply because of how rare they are elsewhere around the world. They are only found in the Pacific Ocean from Mexico to Peru. Your Costa Rican charter captain is very familiar with this species, and can teach you everything you need for landing this coveted fish.

Out in the deep are where the monster-sized fish live. This is where Costa Rica sportfishing gets its world-renowned popularity. Groups can fish six, eight, ten hours or more and target billfish such as marlin or sailfish, tuna, wahoo, mackerel, and dorado. Trolling is the preferred technique for these trips, and anglers with any skill level are invited to experience the thrill of reeling in a trophy. Billfish are mandatory catch-and-release; while other species are available for harvesting. Your Costa Rican charter captain will know these regulations and keep your group compliant.

Reserving a Costa Rica Charter

Now that you know what’s out there, the next step is getting your group on a charter. Hiring a local captain will definitely increase your success rates. And they take care of everything you need for a great day on the water.

FishAnywhere.com is here to help you find the best charter for your group. We’ve carefully vetted and only work with the best captains in the area who are sure to provide a memorable experience. Search for charters near the city you’re staying, or check out these top captains in the area:

If you’re staying in the northern part of Costa Rica, Playa Flamingo is a great place to launch your excursion. For that roosterfish trip, Captain William is a professional captain known for getting his customers on the fish. Or if bull dorado are more your speed, Captain Skeet can get you on the fish.

When it comes to fishing central Costa Rica, there are two main ports that seem to attract the most anglers: Jacó and Quepos. Jacó is situated between Playa Herradura and Playa Hermosa, and between the three of them you should have no trouble reserving a charter. For an excursion you’re sure to always remember, book with Captain Dan Ross and this 43’ Maverick. You’ll spend a full day fishing, targeting a variety of billfish, tuna, dorado, and more. Those closer to Quepos will generally fish the same areas of the Pacific Ocean targeting the same species. A well-rounded fishing charter in the area is Tres Niñas Tours; They have multiple boats and offer a variety of excursions.

The coast of southern Costa Rica is more forest than beaches, but the fishing is still incredible. Reserve this 31’ Bertram in Golfito and get ready for an amazing excursion. You’ll be riding in style to the fishing grounds, and coming back with memories for a lifetime.

Don’t wait a minute longer, start planning your Costa Rica adventure today. You can reserve your charter with a deposit, and start dreaming of bending rods and screaming reels. There’s nothing like a Costa Rica fishing trip – get your charter booked today!

Fishing Charters for Large Groups

Image of person, accessories, sunglasses, water, outdoors, clothing, face, fishing, animal, coho, fish, people

You’re celebrating a new love, another trip around the sun, or a job well done. Or you have a large family that all want to go on a fishing charter. Whatever the reason for your large gathering, a fishing charter is possible. FishAnywhere.com is here to help you get your party of multiple passengers on a boat and bending the rods.

Fishing With Large Groups

You have two options when looking to fish with your large group: either a head boat (or party boat) where everyone is fishing from the same boat; or split up the group among several boats and have a tournament of sorts. There are advantages to both, and it all comes down to which your group prefers.

If you have children in your group, or less than twenty people, a shared-trip on a head boat is a great option. They typically run two trips a day (morning and afternoon), and have a budget-friendly cost per person (anywhere from $ 60-90, depending on location and season). When fishing from a head boat on a shared trip, you join other families on the boat for a day of fishing; this is also a great option for solo or new-to-fishing anglers.

For large groups of 20 or more, you may want to rent out the whole boat. Whether it’s for a special occasion or “no-reason-at-all” kind of day, you can get the whole boat to yourself. Bridal parties and family reunions are great examples of special occasions that captains are familiar with accommodating. Just talk with the captain beforehand, make sure he knows it’s for a private event and what your expectations are; they are happy to customize the trip that fits your needs.

Another option for your large group’s fishing excursion is splitting the group up and creating a mini-tournament. Depending on how many are in your group, you could have three to four passengers in each boat, all fishing the same area. Challenge each other on which boat gets the biggest catch, or most weight among all the catches. A little competition (and maybe some trash talking) makes the trip fun and memorable!

When taking your large group out on the water, remember there are some options – whether you’re fishing on the same boat or in the same area, it’s a day spent together that matters.

Finding Charters for More than 6 People

When planning your big group’s day on the water, you may find it somewhat difficult to find a charter that can accommodate more than six people. That’s because most captains will have what is called a “six pack” license – allowing no more than six passengers on board, plus the crew. Oftentimes people will ask if kids or non-anglers are included in this license, and the simple answer is yes. It doesn’t matter the age of the passengers, or if they are fishing or not, the captain simply cannot take more than six passengers.

To get your large group on a fishing charter, you can either split the group among boats that can accommodate six passengers, or join a head boat. These boats have the capacity and approval to carry more than 6 passengers. The exact number varies, as each vessel has an inspection and given certification for capacity allowed.

Or call FishAnywhere.com (833-446-3474) to help find the perfect charter for your group. Our Customer Service Team will work with you to find the captain that can accommodate large numbers, whether it’s a private or shared charter. No matter the reason, vacation or special occasion, take the headache out of having to coordinate a large group fishing charter, and let our team help you!

Where to Go for Large Group Charters

There are certain parts of the country that have head boats ready for your large group. If you’re in a top tourist destination, chances are you’re likely to find a vessel that can accommodate your numbers.

In Destin, Florida, the Vera Marie of Pelican Adventures is a great option. They run two trips a day and are known for giving their guests the trip of a lifetime. If you’re in Fort Lauderdale, check out Captain Rod’s Catch My Drift. This 85’ vessel accommodates 60 passengers and is great for those families with young kids. Captain Rod also has a 55’ vessel that can carry 40 passengers. This boat is only for private parties, and is great for family reunions, bachelor parties, or any large group gathering. In South Florida, the Lady Pamela is a 65’ boat with plenty of room for your large group. The Lady Pamela is available for shared or private trips; just let the Captain know how many people and your preference and he can accommodate your needs.

Book a Large Group Charter

No matter what the occasion, it’s always nice to have a large group together fishing. Whether it’s work related or a family affair, going fishing is a good way to bond and make new memories. Get away from it all and spend a day on the water. Find a charter for your large group today with FishAnywhere.com; there’s a Customer Support team member standing by ready to help. We’ll help you to make sure you’re finding the perfect trip for your group. And you can reserve your charter with a 10% deposit. Don’t wait… book a fishing excursion for your group today!

Fishing Tips, Tricks and Teachings

Fishing Charters in the Outer Banks

Fishing In Outer Banks

If you’re visiting the Outer Banks in North Carolina (known locally as OBX), you can absolutely go fishing from the surf or local piers. Fishing these waters is an exciting and thrilling adventure for any outdoor enthusiast. But if you’re looking to up your game (so to speak), we recommend fishing with a professional fishing guide or charter captain. To hire a local Outer Banks charter, there’s a few specific cities to start your search. That’s because not all Outer Banks islands are created the same: some have captains and marinas in the area, while others do not.

When fishing in the Outer Banks, you can fish the nearby sounds, or the Atlantic Ocean. Area fish include Redfish, Speckled Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, Striped Bass, Cobia and Tarpon on inshore or nearshore charters. Or head out to the deep blue sea for some of the best tuna, marlin, sailfish, and wahoo fishing you’ve ever seen.

No matter what you’re looking to catch, here are the best places to start your Outer Banks fishing charter, in no particular order.

Wanchese

Wanchese is an awesome little town on Roanoke Island, located in the northern part of North Carolina. Nearby cities include Manteo (also on Roanoke Island) and Nags Head, located across the sound on a barrier island. Wanchese charters have a lot of variety when fishing. You can stay in the calm waters of the sound, or head out through the Oregon Inlet to the Atlantic. The Wanchese Marina has several captains docking their boats here, ready for your adventure. You can also check out Oregon Inlet, just down the road from Bodie Island Lighthouse across the sound. Another marina is located here, and captains offer similar trips.

Hatteras

Located about mid-state, Hatteras is a favorite vacation destination for families. This small town is great, offering lots of restaurants, shops, and activities for your crew. On the west side of the island, the Hatteras Harbor Marina homes several fishing charters. You can opt for a Pamlico Sound fishing trip, or pass through the Hatteras Inlet to access the Atlantic. Hatteras charters are known for their tuna trips, a great option if you’re fishing in the early months of the year.

Kitty Hawk

If you’re staying in the northern section of the Outer Banks (Corolla or Duck), the closest fishing charters you’ll find are in Kitty Hawk, about an hour drive south. While there’s no marina located in Kitty Hawk, several captains are in the area and ready to provide your group with the adventure of a lifetime. Captains are scattered along the Outer Banks, from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head, and of course we already mentioned Wanchese (which has the closest marina, and collection of fishing charters). Captains in the area will typically have a vessel that can accommodate whatever kind of trip you’re looking for (the sound or the ocean). If you don’t have a preference, keep in mind that trips in the sound are typically shorter and calmer, great for fishing with kids or novice anglers.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

Collectively, the Outer Banks is a string of barrier islands along the coast of North Carolina. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east and Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, and Currituck Sound to the west. The islands themselves are not very wide, measuring only 150 yards at its narrowest.

No matter where you’re staying along the coast, you can fish from the surf, piers, kayaks, or boats on either side of the islands. Local bait & tackle shops can sell you everything you need for a great day of fishing. But we recommend traveling to a previously mentioned city to reserve a spot on a charter. These experienced and professional captains will have everything you need for a successful trip, catching fish and creating memories. Schedule your trip early, as Outer Banks captains do get their schedule filled up quickly.

Book an Outer Banks Charter

It’s easier than ever before to find an Outer Banks fishing charter, thanks to FishAnywhere.com. Simply search where you’re staying, and find the closest guide at the best prices. What Amenities Are On Fishing Charters

Fishing Charter Amenities

Planning your family’s fishing charter is no easy feat. There’s a lot to consider, and we’re not just talking about where you’re going or when. In some cases, that’s the easy thing to decide; especially when most of the time the season will determine your catch. No… we’re talking about how to select the best charter in the area with the right amenities for your group.

There’s a lot to consider when selecting the right charter. But don’t worry… FishAnywhere is here to help you discover what’s available, what you need, and how to book your family’s next fishing adventure.

Fishing Charter Amenities

When it comes to amenities on a fishing charter, there’s a lot of variety. Some may be looking for comfort onboard (seating, bathrooms, kitchens, etc.), while others are looking for fishing-specific amenities (outriggers or fighting chair). Let’s take a look at a few of these:

Comfort Amenities

If you have a large group, or children in your group, seating may be a top priority for your fishing adventure. Most fishing vessels will offer some seating, but it truly depends on the kind of vessel you’re on. Smaller boats such as bay boats or even bass boats often only have room for two or three passengers. There is seating, but not a lot of room. Most center consoles will have seating at the bow of the vessel (the front section) or the stern (towards the back). There’s typically enough room for four or five passengers here, including storage under the seats for bags and equipment. Pilot boats often have an enclosed area and lots of seating, that’s if the captain hasn’t cleared it out for fishing gear. It’s best to ask the Captain what seating is available if this is an important amenity for your group.

Another comfort amenity would be the head, or toilet. Being out on the water for several hours can become uncomfortable if you don’t have access to relieve yourself. Having a toilet onboard may be a high priority for your group, and could be the difference maker between two charters.

Other comfort amenities include a salon (inside seating area), refrigerator, kitchen, bathroom (with sink and/or shower), and bedroom (for those 10+ hour charters). These amenities are often included on larger charter vessels and are reflected in the cost of the trip.

Fishing Amenities

For the experienced anglers in the group, you’ll be looking at more than just the creature comforts of the vessel. A successful fishing charter sometimes hinges on the boat’s fishing amenities as much as it does the captain’s experience. Things like a livewell, Fishfinder, powerpoles, and a fighting chair can be important to the success of your trip.

Items like a Fishfinder or livewell are very common on a charter. A livewell is a tank designated to store live fish, most commonly baitfish. Whether it’s live shiner for your largemouth bass fishing trip, or live pinfish for a day fishing the intracoastal waterways, a lively, energetic baitfish can be the difference between a three fish day, and a thirty fish day. Likewise, a Fishfinder is a sonar type device to help captains locate the fish. These work especially well for lake, river, or bottom fishing trips on the ocean.

If you’re fishing the flats, or shallow waters, a power pole(s) is a nice fishing amenity to have. These are an anchoring technology positioned on the stern of the vessel that consist of one or two poles that can quietly be easily lowered to secure the boat into place. For inshore or offshore charters, a fighting chair is something to consider. This is a special chair on sportfishing vessels or center console boats that give the angler some leverage when fighting the fish. Both are additional add-ons to the vessel that give your fishing charter higher success rates.

What To Expect On Fishing Charters

Before you book your next fishing charter, take a look at the available amenities. Whether you’re looking for comfort or a function, pictures of the vessel will help you decide the right vessel for your trip.

Storage space is another thing to consider; a place to store belongings while out on the water. Also be sure to ask the captain what is included in the cost of the trip. Many times the captain will pack a cooler of water bottles or sport drinks, and may also provide sunscreen for your party. Something you may have neglected to pack, but is essential to the trip.

Booking a Fishing Charter with Best Amenities

To find the best amenities around, search FishAnywhere today. Easily compare charters and find the best one for your group. Then book with as little as 10% deposit to reserve your trip. You’ll have the trip set, the amenities selected, and the best fishing adventure just around the corner!
